Beauty Tips

You know the kid who would check into a hotel with his family and proceed to raid the Pringles and Haribo from the mini bar? That wasn’t me entirely... I rushed to the bathroom to gather up the “free” products. When older I would sneak to the spa to peruse the La Mer and charge products to the room, consequences be damned!

My name is Michael and I’m honored that Isabella has invited me to discuss my all-time favorite topic...skin care! Skin care has been an obsession for me since I was a child. It started with my mother showing me all of her nighttime rituals. As a teen going through the awkward acne puberty phase, I began seeing a friends mother who is an esthetician for a weekly appointment. These hour-long facials usually turned into lengthy three hour conversations about products and experimentation and then me heading home to create baking soda masks to restore my PH balance. The appointments became my therapy.

After moving to Los Angeles, I continued with bi-monthly facials with the famed Sonya Dakar whom I had been looking up to for years. She was at the forefront of using vegetable stem cells and light therapies and again our sessions would often last several hours gossiping about all things skincare. I didn’t just want to know what she was doing to my face; I wanted to know the who, what, where, when, and why. I wanted the full education.

Now in my 30s and living in New York City, I have continued my obsession and need for ultimate skincare knowledge. I have cultivated relationships with some of the most innovative skincare brands in the world and the people who create the magic behind the brands. I am constantly discussing their ever-changing philosophies, trying new products, and evolving my own theories, philosophies, and extensive rituals.

I am so honored and excited that Sustainable Edit has invited me on as a Beauty Editor. The first time I met Isabella was after she had been on a nine-hour flight from London to Bogota. Within minutes of our meeting, I had her doing a multi-step cleansing and post flight hydration mask. A few months later the Sustainable Beauty Edit was born.

In this blog, I will be discussing all things skincare, product innovation, and insider tips and tricks. I will be conducting and posting interviews from the people behind some of the top product lines, medical spas, and estheticians.

Here are a few of my favorite products that I have been using for a while now:

1. S Clinical Hydra Cool serum
This isn't just your average hyaluronic acid serum. It works wonders. Perfect for sensitive, dry, and redness prone skin. It contains menthol which opens the pores allowing the serum to seep in deeper. This serum also contains vitamin B5 which is an anti-inflammatory, centella asiatica which is a plant based redness reducer, and mushroom extract. I always use this as a base layer and apply other serums on top.

2. Dr Barbara Sturm Enzyme Cleanser
This is a light exfoliator I use as a face cleanser and a body wash. This is perfect for travel since it’s a powder and can be packed in your carry on, and has the 2-in-1 functionality. The active ingredients in this product: enzyme subtilisin which removes dead skin cells, enzyme Lipase removing excess oil, and Ascorbic acid which hydrate and refreshes the skin with an antioxidant effect.

3. Eminence Clear Skin Probiotics Mask
A clarifying and exfoliating mask that helps control breakouts, reduces pore size and removes excess oils. I have been using this product multiple times a week for years whether I am breaking out or not. I find it very soothing for my skin. Always leaving my skin toned, even and refreshed.
